batteries and ranges

Wisper power and quality
The heart of any electric bike is the battery, it should be high quality and have enough capacity to power your bike for many miles. It is very important to remember that the battery not only gives you range it also gives the motor power to propel the bike up hills when the power is most needed. The higher the battery voltage the more power can be sent to the motor. The larger the capacity of a battery (Ah) the longer the battery will operate at it's highest voltage, and give you maximum hill climbing capability.

Our batteries are the state of the art in lithium technology. When coupled to our advanced Battery Management System we believe we have one of the best batteries available.

The Wisper Li(NiMnCo)O2 37V 16Ah battery is one of the most powerful lithium batteries on the electric bike market, producing a massive 592 Watt hours. The number of Watt hours or the capacity of a battery is very important when choosing an electric bike as it lets you know what the range is likely to be.  Equally important is cell quality and the way the batteries are built.

For a battery cell to be long lasting is is important not to overload it, although it is possible to fit up to 20Wh into the Wisper battery case we believe that after 16Ah the quality and longevity of the battery falls of very sharply.

We offer two battery capacities on the 7 and 9 series Wisper bikes.

37V 16Ah = 492Wh (Wh is the capacity of the battery)

Our 592Wh battery has 45% more capacity than our smaller battery, the performance of a bike with the 504Wh battery is therefore 45% better than the same bike with our407Wh battery installed.

37V x 11Ah = 407Wh

Our 407Wh battery is great for shorter distances where you do not need to keep the maximum power for long journeys. The advantages of using a small battery are; lower price and lighter weight.

When choosing an electric bike it is always worth doing this simple calculation; multiply the Volts by the Amps to work out the Watt hours. Simply put, the more Wh you have, the more electricity will be available to drive your bike, the more power you have available the further your bike will travel and the longer it will be able to cope with those hills.

range

Voltage Amps Capacity Range under road testing
37V 16Ah 592Wh 65 miles (100km)*
37V 11Ah 407Wh 45 miles (100km)*
36V 9Ah 324Wh 30 miles (50km)*

*  The figures above were achieved on a real road with a real rider weighing 11stone 8lb (74kg) (162lb) at about 10 degrees centigrade with some braking. The power level was set to medium and the tyres were at the correct pressure. The road we use is flat so these figures are higher than would be achieved if you were using the bike in a hilly area when the maximum range could fall as low as 50% of these figures depending on rider weight, climatic and road conditions.

electric bike ranges vary massively depending on some simply factors

Weight Not just the weight of the rider but also the weight of any luggage being carried or towed, will effect the range you will get from your bike.
Wind resistance Have you ever wondered why road racers wear Lycra? It’s not just to show off muscles! The fact is that if you were to wear Lycra on your electric bike (I don’t suggest for a moment that you do!) your range would be much higher than if you were wearing a huge overcoat and a nice big set of panniers!
Tyre Pressures Always keep your tyres pumped up to the correct pressure, if you have ever had a flat tyre you will know why.  This is probably the most easiest but most important point to remember, always make sure your tyres are correctly inflated.  You will experience far less problems with punctures too.
Air temperature You will get about 15% - 20% more range on a warm sunny day than you would in deep winter.
Road conditions A smooth flat road is much more efficient than gravel or grass for long range.
Hills I realise you can come down the hill you just went up without using any power but you would have used a lot less power if you covered the same distance on the flat.
Throttle If you are lucky enough to live in an area that allows throttles without pedalling, you can use masses of power getting from start to cruising speed on the throttle alone. So try always to pedal up to a comfortable speed before you transfer to throttle.  Of course throttle use will always reduce range.
Battery age As batteries get older they start to lose the ability to hold a charge for as long as they did when they were new. If you are using a 5 year old battery you will not get the same range as when the battery was charged for the first time.

There are of course other factors such as maintenance and wind speed but these are the most important points to remember.

battery care

Your Wisper bike is equipped with a powerful, high quality Lithium polymer battery. Lithium polymer is recognised as being the very best type of battery for electric bicycle use.

All Lithium Ion batteries must be well cared for to optimise useful life and range. It is the responsibility of the bike owner/operator to ensure the battery is looked after properly. A well-maintained battery should give more than five years effective service

If a battery is not cared for as per our instructions it will not reach it’s optimum performance and may not be covered by our warranty.

battery maintenance

  • Never leave a battery completely depleted or drained for more than 12 hours.
  • Always recharge the battery when possible even after a short journey.
  • During long periods of storage and non-use keep the battery about 2/3 full and top up with a two-hour charge every eight weeks.

From 2012 all chargers are fitted with a 38V “conditioning” circuit.  If you have one of these chargers simply switch it to 38V and charge in the normal manner every 8 weeks.

This will prevent the battery voltage from dropping below safe levels, which can cause irreparable damage to the cells.
  • Only use the charger supplied with the bike or a replacement from Wisper.
  • Keep the battery in a dry room.
  • For optimum power and range keep battery in a warm room above 15 degrees c.

All batteries claimed under warranty will be tested to ensure they have been maintained as per our instructions.
